Van Dyke Parks- Song Cycle

Song Cycle by Van Dyke Parks is easily one of the most interesting albums I've listened to in quite some time. Released in 1968, the album is psychedelic pop, a style that was popular then. There are tracks on the album that are resemble those of The Beatles or The Beach Boys (the latter of whom he actually worked with). The musical range on the album is fairly wide from folk covers to orchestral pop songs to experimental shorts, the album has a lot to offer stylistically and even breaks into the realm of show tunes at times. One interesting fact of the album is that it is one of the most expensive albums ever made but performed horribly. However, the influence of the album is felt, from artists like Jim O'Rourke to Joanna Newsom (both of whom Parks has worked with). Overall the album is definitely worth a listen, especially if you enjoy happy 60s psychedelic music.
